Winter is Here!
January 05, 2025
With an extended forecast of freezing nights, here are some tips to keep your pipes from freezing:
Drain all water from lines - if possible, each evening turn water off using the ball valve at the meter or other shut off and run a faucet outside and inside to drain all water. Be sure to drain your water heater or any other appliances that may store water and are not well insulated.
Leave faucets dripping slowly - if you cannot turn your water off, let one or 2 faucets drip overnight to keep water moving through them. Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow heat to circulate to help keep pipes warm
If pipes do freeze, do not try to force water through them. Allow them to thaw naturally, or use a blow dryer on low settings to help defrost them.
If you do have a pipe bust, you can turn your water off at the ball valve located just after the meter where your line connects so you can make repairs. Be sure to check each day for broken lines in and under (if not on a foundation) your house as well as outside around faucets or other areas with water.
