Water Conservation and Drought Contingency

Water is life! Picosa WSC is dedicated to making sure we have water to serve our current members and for generations to come. Water conservation is a great way for you, our members, to help us achieve this goal.

Here are some interesting facts about water and tips to help you save water (& money!):

  • We are not producing any new water. The water we are drinking now has been here since the formation of earth. It has been continually recycled through the hydrological process.
  • Less than 1% of all water on earth is in a drinkable state.
  • The Carrizo Aquifer, our major aquifer, stretches from the Texas/Arkansas/Louisiana border to the Rio Grande - over 500 miles.
  • Texas has a "Rule of Capture" when it comes to water - if you pull it out of the ground, it's yours. Due to our proximity to San Antonio and the major population growth in the state, it makes protecting our water source a top priority.
  • The need for water has many companies developing technology to treat saltwater, and even wastewater, for human consumption.

Ways to Save

Members can do their part to help conserve water with just a few simple steps. Plus, using less water keeps your water bill lower!!

  • Check for leaks between your meter and house regularly, but especially if the ground goes from really dry to wet or vice versa. This change will cause the ground to contract or expand and move. Most service lines are PVC and it does not like to bend!
  • Fix dripping faucets or running toilets. These will increase water usage quickly even when they don't seem to be that bad. A leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year. That's the amount of water needed to take more than 180 showers! The EPA reports that an average leaking toilet can waste about 200 gallons of water every day.
  • When you find a leak, fix it right away. The longer it goes, the worse it will get.
  • Don't leave water running unattended. Leaving the water hose running while watering plants is convenient, but run-off that doesn't get to the plants doesn't help them and raises bills. And, it's really easy to get distracted and forget you have the water on!
